Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common liver cancer accounting for approximately 90% of all cancers arising in the liver. As per estimates of World Health Organization, it is the fifth most common cancer and third leading cause of cancer related deaths worldwide. Recent ICMR data estimated HCC to be fourth and eighth leading cause of cancer related deaths among Indian men and women respectively.
Treatment options for hepatocellular carcinoma depend on factors such as the stage of the cancer, the size and number of tumors, the liver function, and the patient’s overall health. Treatment may involve surgery to remove the tumor (resection or liver transplant), locoregional therapies (such as radiofrequency ablation or transarterial chemoembolization), targeted therapy, immunotherapy, or systemic chemotherapy. The choice of treatment depends on the individual case and is determined by a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals.
