Joe Root has justified his choice to prioritize preparation for the Ashes by playing a minimal role in the IPL. Despite being selected only three times for Rajasthan Royals and batting once, scoring just 10 runs from 15 balls, he believes that participating in the IPL was more beneficial than playing Championship cricket in English conditions.

“I love playing for Yorkshire and I love the County Championship,” Root told ESPNcricInfo. “It’s the bedrock of our game back in the UK and it’s so influential in developing players.
